  13. This is a very simple word processor designed to allow work in both English
  14. and Russian. To allow this, it supports the standard Russian Cyrillic
  15. script. I put it together as I was learning some Russian and did not want
  16. to have to pay a lot of money for a word processing package which would
  17. allow me to type in the language.

  19. Files supplied :

  21. run.bat         -       runs cyril with this file

  31. If you have a hard disk, the supplied install.bat will create a directory
  32. 'cyril' on disk drive c: and copy the files from the current working
  33. directory to it. To do this, after you have read this file, exit this    
  34. program with Esc F Q, then type INSTALL. The files starting with 'cyril'    
  35. are essential, the others could be removed if necessary!

  38. Requirements:
  39.        The first version was geared around my own configuration. For that
  40.        reason it was limited to needing at least an EGA graphics
  41.        controller. However, this version can make use of CGA, but it has to
  42.        use graphics mode, so it should be noted that this is very slow,
  43.        thus EGA is recommended!

  45.        It assumes a printer which supports Epson commands, and it is much
  46.        faster if you have one with downloadable font support. The results    
  47.        are of course much better on 24-pin printers than on 9-pin, but    
  48.        readable on either. If the Epson restriction is a problem to you,    
  49.        get in touch, and I can gear a future version to suit you.

  52. Operation:
  53.        The simplest way to operate it is to get used to hitting the ESC
  54.        key whenever you want to do anything apart from type. When you first
  55.        hit ESC, the menu bar at the top lights up (well, it turns blue).
  56.        You can then select any of the commands (eg Search) by hitting the
  57.        arrow keys to left or right until it is highlighted, then hitting
  58.        the downarrow or carriage return key. This then pulls down the
  59.        Search menu. Selection of the commands within the pulldown menu is
  60.        then by use of the up or down arrow keys, hitting return to select
  61.        one. The alternative is to use the upper case, highlighted character
  62.        within each of the words (eg 'S' for Search, then 'F' for Find)
  63.        these will also take you through the same menu structure, so a
  64.        combination of arrow keys and selection characters is also possible.
  65.        Return to typing mode is also by hitting the ESC key once or twice,    
  66.        until the menu disappears.

  69. Cyrillic:
  70.        Switching between the English character set and Russian Cyrillic is
  71.        simple by use of the 'Scroll Lock' key. When Scroll Lock is on,
  72.        (indicated by the word 'Russian' appearing in the top right corner
  73.        of the screen), Cyrillic characters will be generated by the
  74.        keyboard, when it is not, English will be used.
  75.  
  76.        The keyboard layout for Cyrillic is very close to the usual Soviet
  77.        layout, and an option is to display that keyboard on the bottom of    
  78.        the screen. A set of keyboard stickers is supplied to all who
  79.        register as users of the product. These are high quality stickers    
  80.        because the last thing you want are bits of paper which start to    
  81.        peel after a few months and leave your fingers all yucky! These
  82.        enable the user to switch off the keyboard display option, using all    
  83.        the screen for word processing.

  85.        Please note that changes to the keyboard layout, the addition of
  86.        extra characters, the re-design of some of the fonts, etc, could all
  87.        be done quite easily. So if you are used to a different keyboard
  88.        layout, or need Ukrainian extensions (or even another language    
  89.        version!) just drop me a note, and I will see what I can do.

  92. Setup:
  93.        Initial setup for the printer should be done by hitting the ESC key    
  94.        to get into the menus, then using the Option menu to set both the    
  95.        Download and Printer pin settings.  If you cannot figure these out    
  96.        by looking at your printer manual, please contact me, and I'll see    
  97.        what I can do. Note that the simplest setting is Download OFF and 9    
  98.        pins.

  100. Underline, Bold, and Enlarged :
  101.        These three different ways of highlighting text are available in    
  102.        both Russian and English, but only on printers with downloaded font    
  103.        capabilities.  The features are switched on and off by inserting a    
  104.        special code into the text.  This is done by using the Layout menu.    
  105.        For example when you require the next word to be underlined, you hit    
  106.        ESC to get the menu bar, then hit L to pull down the Layout menu,    
  107.        then hit U to select Underline.  This will insert a double    
  108.        exclamation mark character in the text.  You then type the word to    
  109.        be underlined, and repeat the ESC L U operation to get another    
  110.        underline marker.  The word between these markers will be printed    
  111.        underlined!    
  112.                 This will be underlined.    This will not.
  113.                 This is bold.               But not this.
  114.                 This is enlarged.           This is normal.
  115.        Note that combinations of the three are possible, but many printers    
  116.        do not support all three combined, so experiment with it!

  119. Control Keys:
  120.        As well as the pull down menus, many commands have been implemented
  121.        in using control key sequences (like WordStar).  If you are used to
  122.        these, they can be useful, but don't try to learn them as a new    
  123.        user, since the menu system is far easier to use!.

  183.        This is being distributed as shareware, ie if you like it you should feel
  184.        morally obliged to send me some money to register. Becoming a registered    
  185.        user gives you a set of high quality keyboard stickers (very useful), and    
  186.        a copy with your own name on it. This then entitles you to a ten pound    
  187.        commission on any other users who register from your copy! If you find
  188.        any problems with the program, let me know and I will attempt to fix them
  189.        quickly. Whenever a major new version is produced, all registered users
  190.        will be sent a copy.
